He received his master's degree from Beijing Postgraduate School of Wuhan University of Geology in 1982, and received his PhD from the University of Auckland, New Zealand in 1991. As well as did his postdoctoral research at the South African Museum, Cape Town, South Africa.

After graduating from university, he worked as a geological technician in the First Geological Brigade of Hubei Geological Bureau. He was also employed as a lecturer at the Department of Geology, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), a senior researcher at the Institute of Marine Geology, Department of Geology, University of Cape Town, Republic of South Africa, a geological engineer at the French Foundation Construction Company, Hong Kong, and Maunsell Geotechnical Services Ltd., Hong Kong. Before the handover of Hong Kong, he was recruited by the British Government as a geotechnical Engineer and a geological Engineer in the Planning Division of the Civil Engineering and Development Department.

After retiring from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, he returned to the mainland and was employed as a professor in the Department of Management, Institute of Translation, Guangdong Vocational and Technical Normal University and the Foreign Language Department, Software Engineering Institute of Guangzhou of the University of Guangzhou.
